Shot Advantage Not Enough For Valkyries Against Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – Despite holding a more-than-double advantage in the number of shots taken and a significant advantage in time of possession, the Converse University women's soccer team (1-2) fell to regional opponent Anderson (3-0) Wednesday at Spero Financial Field in Anderson.

Despite the score in the early goings of the contest, the Valkyries held a possession advantage early. Converse managed eight shots in the first 45 minutes while holding Anderson to just three. The Valkyries put three shots on goal in the opening half, none of which were able to find the back of the net. The Trojans, on the other hand, put two shots on target, both of which passed the Valkyries' keeper.

Sophomore Hannah Liebig, junior Jasmine Hernandez and senior Ellie Gore all attempted two shots in the opening half. Liebig put two of those shots on target.

Despite the possession and shots advantage, Anderson held a 2-0 lead heading into the second half of play.

The Valkyries continued that possession advantage in the second half, taking eight shots in the second 45 minutes while only allowing the home team four. Converse took all five of the second half's corner kicks.

A 68th minute goal put the Trojans up 3-0 approximately halfway through the second half. Never backing down from a challenge, Converse managed to find the back of the net as Liebig drilled a kick from the top of the box assisted by junior Skylar Lund in the 72nd minute.

While the Valkyries found themselves on offense for most of the final 18 minutes, they were unable to secure another goal and fell 3-1.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 14 as they begin Conference Carolinas action against Chowan. The match is scheduled for 1 P.M.
