Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Falls To Nationally-Ranked Clayton State in Season Opener

MORROW, Ga. – After a late would-be equalizer goal was waved off, the Converse University men's soccer team (0-1) fell to the No. 16 Clayton State Lakers (1-0) by a final score of 4-2 Thursday night in both teams' season opener.

Despite the difference in scoring, the Valkyries and Lakers were deadlocked in shots and shots on goal with 10 and seven respectively for both teams.

The Lakers scored the opening goal in the 21st minute of the game, the lone shot to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes.

Clayton State followed that with a goal just under three minutes into the second half and padded the lead to 3-0 ten minutes later.

Junior Guilherme Fontes netted both of the Valkyries goals, first a 74th-minute net-finder with an assist from senior Sinan Kilincarslan. Then nine minutes later, Fontes netted a penalty kick, cutting a once three-goal deficit to just a single goal with just under eight minutes to play.

Just over a minute later, beautiful ball movement from the Valkyries led to what would have been the equalizing goal, but the referees signaled the only offside call of the match, waving off the goal and leaving Converse down 3-2.

Clayton State immediately took the ball downfield and netted their fourth goal of the contest. That proved to be the final goal of the match as the Lakers prevailed 4-2.

Converse returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 7 as they take on North Georgia in Dahlonega, Georgia at 5 P.M.
