SPARTANBURG, S.C. – By scoring his third game-winning goal of the season, junior
Guilherme Fontes sealed a 1-0 regional, nonconference victory for the Converse University men's soccer team (5-1-1, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) over the Tusculum Pioneers (0-4-1, 0-1-1 SAC) Wednesday night at Weisiger Stadium.
The Valkyries held a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half but were unable to find the back of the goal. Tusculum's one shot was not on-goal. Redshirt junior
Harry O'Brien recorded all three of the Valkyries' saves. The entire trio came in the second half. O'Brien earned his first win in the box for his 45 minutes in the box.
The Valkyries' go-ahead chance came in the 80th minute as a foul in the box sent Fontes to the line where he drilled the shot into the back of the net, putting Converse up one goal with just over 10 minutes to play.
The Pioneers managed just two shots over the final 10 minutes as Converse won the first-ever meeting between the teams 1-0.
Converse returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 28 as they host the Emmanuel University Lions at Wesigier Stadium. The match is set to begin at 3:30 P.M.
