Fontes Extends Team Scoring Lead as Valkyries Continue Winning Ways Against Lees-McRae

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – After a long break from the pitch due to Hurricane Helene, the Converse University men's soccer team (6-1-1, 3-0 Conference Carolinas) picked up right back where they left off as they downed Lees-McRae (2-3-3, 2-2-1 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 3-1 Thursday afternoon.

Lasting damage from Hurricane Helene forced the game to Misenheimer on the campus of Pfeiffer University.

Senior Jaxon Keene opened the scoring with an eighth minute goal. Just over 10 minutes later, junior Guilherme Fontes scored his seventh goal of the season.

The Valkyries netted their two first-half goals on just six shots in the first half, holding Lees-McRae to just a trio of shots. Converse headed into the halftime break up 2-0.

Lees-McRae cut the lead to just one with a goal just 11 minutes into the second half.

Following a foul in the box, Fontes again netted a penalty kick goal with just under nine minutes to play in the game, once again putting the Valkyries up on goal, 2-1.

Converse rode out the rest of the game securing the 2-1 victory.

The Valkyries are back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 12 as they head to Due West, South Carolina to take on the Erskine College Flying Fleet. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 P.M.
