Hernandez Extends Team Scoring Lead Saturday Against Belmont Abbey

Belmont, N.C. – With junior Jasmine Hernandez scoring in her fourth game this season and extending her team lead in scoring to 10 points, the Converse University women's soccer team (2-3-1, 1-0-1 Conference Carolinas) settled for a 1-1 draw with the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (2-1-2, 1-0-2 Conference Carolinas) Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Valkyries managed just a single shot in the first half while the Crusaders got off a dozen of their own. Freshman goalkeeper Gabriella Gudeman kept the team in the game by recording seven first-half saves, matching her season-high set Wednesday against Lander in just 45 minutes. She ended the game with eight saves. Despite the disparity in shots, both teams headed to the halftime break knotted up 0-0.

It wasn't until the 69th minute that Hernandez found the back of the net, putting the Valkyries up 1-0 with just over 21 minutes remaining in the contest.

But the Valkyries' lead lasted almost exactly 10 minutes before the Crusaders scored the equalizer, bringing the game to its final score of 1-1. Both teams attempted to gain possession and find the go-ahead goal, but both squads came up short in their efforts.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 24 as they host the Mars Hill Lions for a nonconference matchup at Weisiger Stadium. The match is set to begin at 6 P.M.
