Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Dwelly’s First Goal as a Valkyrie Leads Men’s Soccer to Victory over Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – Junior Harry Dwelly's 73rd minute goal proved the difference as the Converse University men's soccer team (4-1-1, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) opened up Northwest divisional play with a 1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey (2-2-2, 1-1-1 Conference Carolinas) Saturday night at Alumni Field.

Converse held an early advantage in time of possession and shots, holding Belmont Abbey to just two in the first 45 minutes of the match while firing off five of their own. Just one of the Crusaders' first-half shots was on goal, giving sophomore goalkeeper Mateo Sanchez his lone first-half save. Despite controlling the offensive aspect of the first half, both teams were scoreless in the first half of the contest.

The score remained that way until Dwelly booted the ball with his right foot directly into the lower left corner of the goal, putting Converse up 1-0. Belmont Abbey managed just a pair of shots over the final 17 minutes, the first of which didn't come until almost 10 minutes following Dwelly's goal. The Valkyries' defense held true and Converse escaped the Tar Heel state with a 1-0 victory over the Crusaders.

Converse returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as they host the Tusculum Pioneers at Weisiger Stadium for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to begin at 7:30 P.M.
