Fortuce Nets First Goal in Purple and Gold as Valkyries Draw with Bob Jones

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After conceding an early goal to the Bob Jones University Bruins (2-2-1), the Converse University men's soccer team (3-1-1, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) pulled even with a 49th minute goal from junior Luis Fortuce.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Harry O'Brien made his first start in the box for Converse. He allowed one goal on nine shots faced and recorded five saves.

The Valkyries dominated time of possession, allowing just three shots in the first half. Converse took 11 shoots of their own in the first half. Despite that, Converse was unable to net a goal in the first 45 minutes of the game and Bob Jones took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Then just under four minutes into the second half, Fortuce struck a deflected shot from a save by the Bruins' keeper to the back of the net, drawing the game even at 1-1 with his first collegiate career goal.

The Valkyries and Bruins were even on shots in the second half and time of possession was more balanced than in the first half. Neither team was able to find the go-ahead second goal and the Valkyries and Bruins drew 1-1.

The Valkyries are back on the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 21 as they head to Belmont, North Carolina to take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders as they kickoff Conference Carolinas Northwest Division play. The match is set for 7 P.M.
