SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Led by a two-goal performance from junior Guilherme Fontes, the Converse University men's soccer team (3-1, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) topped Conference Carolinas preseason favorite Chowan (1-1-1, 0-1 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.

Chowan struck first in the game, scoring in the 18th minute with a ball just out of reach of the Valkyries' keeper. A red card in the 21st minute put Chowan a man down for the remaining 70 minutes of the game.

The Valkyries ripped just three shots in the first half and, despite the man-up advantage, were unable to score a goal in the first 45 minutes of the game.

It wouldn't be until the 70th minute that Fontes secured the equalizing goal off of a free kick just outside the box.

With time ticking down inside of three minutes to play, another red card for Chowan set up another free kick for the Valkyries. Again taken by Fontes, the São Paulo native buried his shot to the back of the net and secured the game-winning goal.

The Hawks tried desperately to get the ball into their attacking half of the field, but were unsuccessful and Converse secured the 2-1 victory.

Converse returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 17 as they host the Bob Jones Bruins at Weisiger Stadium for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to begin at 7 P.M.
