ANDERSON, S.C. – One goal in each half of the team's third regional matchup in as many games pushed the Converse University men's soccer team (2-1) to a 2-0 victory over the Anderson Trojans (0-1-1) Wednesday night at Spero Financial Field in Anderson.

Despite the Trojans having an advantage in scoring opportunities early, the Valkyries were able to capitalize on their early chances, scoring on just three shots taken in the first half. Two of those shots were on goal. The Valkyries' game-winner was junior Guilherme Fontes' 12th-minute goal off of an assist from senior Hayden Gensler.

The Trojans managed nine shots in the first half but only put one on target. Converse took a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Anderson managed to outshoot the Valkyries 7-5 in a second half that saw the visiting Valkyries maintain their lead. Sophomore goalkeeper and Anderson native Mateo Sanchez recorded five saves in the second half, quintupling his single save from the first half.

Senior forward Johannes Haden buried a 59th-minute assist from Gensler to put the Valkyries up 2-0. Neither team eluded the goalkeepers again as Converse secured their second regional victory of the season. It is the fourth time in as many years that Converse has won two of their first three games. 

Converse returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 14 for a highly-anticipated rematch of the 2023 Conference Carolinas Championship Match against the Chowan Hawks. The match is scheduled for 3:30 P.M. at Weisiger Stadium on the campus of Converse University.
