WILSON, N.C. – The Converse University softball team (14-28, 3-11 Conference Carolinas) was not able to capitalize on an early 2-0 lead in game two of their doubleheader with the Barton Bulldogs (18-16, 7-5 Conference Carolinas) as a two-out RBI double in the sixth inning gave the home team the decisive third run. Barton won game one 9-0 in five innings.
Game One: Barton 9, Converse 0 (5 Innings)
The Bulldogs struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning.
Sophomore Victoria Dichio knocked the Valkyries' lone hit of the game with two outs in the top half of the second inning, a single into center field.
Barton added three more runs in both the bottom of the second and fourth innings, giving them nine and ending the game after five innings.
Game Two: Barton 3, Converse 2
Converse struck first in game two as a lead-off single came around to score with an RBI single from junior Sydney Watson. A double steal brought home the team's second run of the game before the first inning was over.
Converse picked up a pair of two-out hits in the second, but a perfectly-executed relay cut down the would-be third run at the plate.
A one out sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning halved the Converse lead to one, 2-1.
A late lead-off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning was followed by a two-out, RBI double for Barton, giving them their first lead of the game with three outs left for the Valkyries to score a run. They were unable to do so and Barton took the game 3-2.
On deck for the Valkyries:
The Valkyries continue the Tar-Heel-State leg of their road trip as they head to Murfreesboro, North Carolina to take on the Chowan Hawks tomorrow, April 6, beginning at noon.
