MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Propelled by a seven-run sixth inning in game one of the team's Saturday doubleheader, the Converse University softball team (15-29, 4-12 Conference Carolinas) defeated the host Chowan Hawks (6-23, 2-12 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 17-6. A sixth-inning home run in game two pushed the Hawks past the Valkyries 6-5. The Valkyries' 17 runs scored is one shy of the program single-game record which Converse set earlier this season.
By reaching their 15th victory this season, the Valkyries have tied the program record for wins in a season, a record that was set by the 2023 squad.
Junior Riley Lingerfelt received the win in game one and the loss in game two. She threw a six-inning complete game in the front half of the twinbill. In game two, she pitched three innings, exactly half of the Valkyries' innings, and allowed just one run. Across both appearances totaling nine innings pitched, she struck out 12 batters and walked just two.
Senior Madeline Modica led the team offensively with five hits and five RBIs on the day including a two-RBI home run in the first inning of game one. Sophomore Chesney Miles knocked four hits of her own and swiped two bases.
Game One: Converse 17, Chowan 6 (6 Innings)
The Valkyries' high-scoring affair started when junior
Sydney Watson singled with two outs in the top of the first, setting up the opportunity for Modica to put Converse up 2-0 early with a home run to left field.
After Chowan briefly took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first, a one-out single from senior Kayla Rocha turned into another run on a two-out RBI single into left field from sophomore Ayellad Howard. A fielding error allowed the Valkyries fourth run of the game to come across the plate and Converse rounded out the inning with a two-out, two-RBI double from Watson, scoring Miles and Howard. Entering the bottom half of the second inning, Converse led 6-3.
Chowan went down in order in the second and third innings. Converse reached double-digit runs for the first time since March 23 against Southern Wesleyan with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Two throwing errors by the Hawks' pitcher allowed two of the runs to score. Modica brought home another run with a single into left-center field and Converse rounded out the scoring in the inning via another Hawk error.
A lead-off double in the bottom of the fifth was followed by a home run, cutting the Valkyries' lead to 10-5.
Converse kicked off their highest-scoring inning of the day when Miles, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on a pass ball. Freshman Kiarra Thomas brought home two runs with an RBI double. Senior Emily Ingle did the same with her first home run of the season two batters later. Finally, the final two runs of the inning were scored with Watson's second two-out, two-RBI double of the game, giving Converse 17 total runs and bringing the lead to 12 runs, 17-5.
A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth was not enough for Chowan to extend the game and the Valkyries won 17-6.
Game Two: Chowan 6, Converse 5
Chowan opened the scoring in game two with a five spot in the bottom of the second inning.
Miles knocked a one-out single through the right side to give the Valkyries their first run of the game and Modica added two more with a single of her own.
Converse tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly and RBI single from sophomore Karleigh Crabill and Howard respecitvely.
Modica led off the top of the fifth inning with a single and got all the way to third base with just one out. But an impressive defensive play from Chowan got Modica out at home attempting to score on a sacrifice bunt. The Valkyries got two runners into scoring position with two outs in the sixth inning, but were again unable to score.
A lead off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to the difference for Chowan, who won the game 6-5.
On deck for the Valkyries:
The Valkyries wrap up their nonconference slate and eight-game road trip with a visit to the South Atlantic Conference's Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tennessee on Monday, April 8 at 1 P.M. The Valkyries will have the rest of the week off from games before hosting Belmont Abbey for senior day on Saturday, April 13 at Tyger River Stadium. First pitch with the Crusaders is scheduled for noon.
