Game Recap: Softball |

Converse Softball Battles Pacers on Saturday

AIKEN, S.C.  – Getting out-hit by just three hits on the day and boasting a 1.000 fielding percentage in game two, the Converse University softball (6-12) fell in both games of their doubleheader with the USC Aiken on Saturday. They dropped a close 3-1 game to kickoff the day and fell 8-0 in five innings in game two.

Four Valkyries evenly split the team's four hits in game one while freshman Madison Sheadel led the team in game two by notching two of the team's five hits. Sophomore Victoria Dichio struckout five as she pitched a six-inning complete game to open play.

Game One: USC Aiken 3, Converse 1

Sophomore Jaydin Gentile kicked off the Valkyries hitting and scoring for the day with a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning.

After a single, stolen base and a fielding error put runners on first and second with no outs, the Pacers plated two with an RBI double to right-center field. The inning was prolonged by a dropped third strike, allowing a run to score via an error on the double steal attempt.

Converse managed just one base runner during the final three innings but also held USC Aiken scoreless over those same three innings, allowing Aiken to take the 3-1 victory.

Game Two: USC Aiken 8, Converse 0 (5 Innings)

Converse started the game with a leadoff single but were unable to bring the runner around to score as the next three Valkyries sat down in order. The Valkyries had back-to-back one-out singles in the second inning, but the Pacers' center fielder was able to throw out the first runner at third base, giving the Valkyries just a runner at first with two outs, who was caught stealing to end the inning.

A wild pitch and a home run in the bottom of the third gave USC Aiken a 3-0 lead. They pushed that lead to eight runs when they knocked a two-RBI double and a three-RBI home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Sheadel's one-out single was not enough to keep the Valkyries going as the game came to a run-rule ending of 8-0 in the fifth inning.

On deck for the Valkyries:

The Valkyries return home following a four-game road trip as they host the Allen Yellow Jackets at Tyger River Stadium on Monday, Feb. 26. First pitch is scheduled for 3 P.M.
