Game Recap: Softball |

Pitching Shines As Valkyries Sweep Yellow Jackets

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – Continuing her stellar junior season, right-handed pitcher Riley Lingerfelt again etched her name into the Converse record books as she tossed the second no-hitter in program history in the Valkyries' second game of the evening against Allen (0-13). The Converse University softball team (8-12) won both games of their doubleheader: first winning 4-1 and taking game two 6-0.

Sophomore Victoria Dichio also collected a win for her start in the circle in game one. In a seven-inning complete game appearance, she struck out eight batters, a season-high for the Crawfordville, Florida native. Freshman Kiarra Thomas brought home all three of the Valkyries' RBIs in game one.

Game One: Converse 4, Allen 1

The teams kept the bats relatively quiet in the first game, combining for just five hits over the seven-inning affair. Converse struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Thomas doubled to left field, scoring the first two batters for the Valkyries who were both issued free passes. Although Converse was able to load the bases with just one out, they had to settle for just the two runs.

Allen scored their only run of the day on a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the second inning.

The teams went back-and-forth scoreless over the third and fourth innings before the Valkyries added a run on an RBI groundout from Thomas.

The Valkyries final run of the game scored as senior Kayla Rocha crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

Despite a fielding error in the top of the seventh inning, Dichio held on to retire the next three batters, securing her third win in the circle of the year and the 4-1 victory for Converse.

Game Two: Converse 6, Allen 0

With Lingerfelt already at four strikeouts in the game, the Valkyries struck first in the bottom of the second inning as sophomore AJ Albano scored on a wild pitch.

After another three strikeouts against the Yellow Jackets in the top of the third, junior Sydney Watson doubled the one-run lead with an RBI single into left field. Sophomore Ariya Deans added two more runs to the Valkyries' total as she knocked a two-out single into right field, giving Converse a 4-0 lead. But the Valkyries were far from done as sophomores Karleigh Crabill and Ayellad Howard knocked back-to-back RBI hits, plating the Valkyries final two runs of the game, 6-0.

Lingerfelt struck out the side in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, adding two more in the top of the seventh, cruising to the 6-0 complete-game, no-hit victory.

On deck for the Valkyries:

The Valkyries have a short break following Monday's doubleheader as they are back on the diamond on Sunday, March 3 as they head to Hartsville to take on the Coker Cobras. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon. They return home to the friendly confines of Tyger River Stadium as they host Georgia College on Thursday, March 7.
