Softball Takes on Saint Leo and Edward Waters at Old Coast Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – In day one of their appearance at the Old Coast Classic, the Converse University softball team (2-6) fell in their first game of the day to No. 18 Saint Leo (5-3) 8-0 and then returned to the diamond for the late game where they fell to the defending SIAC champions, the Edward Waters Tigers (5-5), by a final score of 8-5.

Game One: No. 18 Saint Leo 8, Converse 0 (6 Innings)

After holding the Lions without a run in the bottom of the first inning despite a two-out double, Converse got their first base runner of the game when senior Kayla Rocha was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the second. She was stranded as the next batter struck out.

Saint Leo plated one run in the second and two in the third giving them a 4-0 lead. Following a scoreless fourth inning, a sacrifice fly and a double plated three more runs for the Lions.

A bases-loaded walk ended the game, giving the Lions their eighth run and enacting the run rule.

Game Two: Edward Waters 8, Converse 5

A homerun in the first inning and a pair of wild pitches put the Tigers up 3-0 early in the Valkyries' second game of the evening.

Never ones to let being behind get to them, the Valkyries plated two runs with two outs when sophomore AJ Albano reached on a fielding error, cutting the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning.

Five runs in the top of the sixth inning increased the Edward Waters lead to six runs.

Once again finding a way to score, Albano launched a home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the sixth cutting the lead to 8-3.

Converse held the Tigers scoreless in the top of seventh inning and plated two runs on a pair of errors, but were unable to manufacture the five runs needed to extend the game and fell 8-5.

The Valkyries return to the diamond tomorrow at 11 A.M. as they take on the hosts of the Old Coast Classic, the Flagler Saints, in a doubleheader.
