Softball Wraps Up Old Coast Classic Against Host Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – In their final pair of games outside of the Palmetto State before returning home from the Old Coast Classic, the Converse University softball team (2-8) fell in both games of their doubleheader against the host Flagler Saints (9-3). The Saints took game one 4-1 before Converse forced the hosts to score in the bottom of the seventh to end game two 3-2.

Junior Sydney Watson led the Valkyries in hitting for Sunday's doubleheader. She notched three hits on the day. Sophomore Karleigh Crabill picked up two hits, a single and a double, and stole one base on her way to scoring one of the Valkyries' two runs in game two of the day.

The Valkyries stole six bases in game two while only allowing a pair of stolen bags from the Saints.

Game One: Flagler 4, Converse 1

A pair of Valkyrie errors in the first followed by an RBI single allowed the Saints to take an early 3-0 lead to open game one of the day.

The Valkyries threatened to cut the lead in the top of the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but a fielder's choice cut down the runner at the plate and the inning ended quietly for Converse.

After a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Saints increased their lead with a two-out RBI double.

A one-out single from junior Sydney Watson scored senior Kayla Rocha who was pinch running following a one-out double from freshman Madison Davis.

Neither team manufactured a run following Watson's RBI and Flagler secured the 4-1 victory.

Game Two: Flagler 3, Converse 2

Flagler again struck first with an unearned run which scored from second base on a single up the middle.

With two runners in scoring position and just one out, freshman Kiarra Thomas, pinch hitting for Rocha, doubled to right field, picking up two RBIs and giving Converse their first lead of the weekend.

The next three-and-a-half innings went by scoreless until three consecutive two-out singles brought home the tying run for the Saints.

After a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh, a wild pitch and a throwing error allowed the game-winning run to score, ending the game 3-2 in favor of Flagler.

Converse returns home to the friendly confines of Tyger River Stadium for a special Valentine's Day doubleheader against the St. Andrews Knights. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 P.M.
