SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Converse University men's soccer team (9-1-6, 6-0-5 Conference Carolinas) scored first but was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Lees-McRae Bobcats (4-4-7, 4-3-5 Conference Carolinas) Saturday evening at Weisiger Stadium.

The Valkyries held an 8-2 advantage in shots during the first half. Both teams managed two shots on goal, neither of which found the back of the net and the Valkyries and Bobcats entered halftime tied 0-0.

It wasn't until the 58th minute when senior Johannes Haden was fouled in the box that senior defender Gabriel Verona netted a spectacular penalty kick goal, pushing the Valkyries to a 1-0 lead.

With just over 20 minutes remaining in the match, Lees-McRae evened the game 1-1 with a strike just outside the reach of Valkyries' keeper Mateo Sanchez.

A second and decisive goal alluded both teams over the final 20 minutes and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Valkyries return to the pitch one final time in the 2024 regular season as they head to Tigerville to take on the North Greenville Trailblazers on Monday, Nov. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
