Lund Nets Game-Winner As Valkyries Survive Tornado

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With her first goal of the season, junior Skylar Lund pushed the Converse University women's soccer team (6-4-2, 4-1-2 Conference Carolinas) past the King Tornado (1-8-2, 1-5-2 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 2-0 Tuesday night at Weisiger Stadium.

The Valkyries and Tornado were even on shots in the first half but Converse outpaced King in shots 10-6 in the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabriella Gudeman played 85:45 of the game in the box and recorded all five of the team's saves. Sophomore Allie Nepomuceno played the final 4:15 as the Valkyries' goalkeeper.

Lund, with an assist from freshman Sam Quillen on a corner perfectly placed from sophomore Hannah Liebig, drilled a header past the Tornado's keeper to put Converse up 1-0 in the 22nd minute.

Graduate forward Shelby McCutchen doubled the lead in the 78th minute off of an assist from the team's leading scorer, junior Jasmine Hernandez, securing the 2-0 victory for Converse.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 24 as they make the return trip to King. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 P.M.
