SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the closing moments of a Conference Carolinas rivalry match between Converse University and Francis Marion, senior
Brooklyn Galler (Rio Rancho, N.M.) found fellow senior
Angelica Gonzalez (Spartanburg, S.C.) for the game-winning goal as the Valkyries took a 1-0 win over the Patriots at Weisiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Converse improves to 3-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in Conference Carolinas action, while Francis Marion falls to 6-2-0 and 3-1-0 in conference play this season. The Valkyries have now won back-to-back matches for the first time since the Spring 2020 season.
In the opening half of action, the Patriots proved to be the more aggressive team on the offensive side of the ball. Francis Marion outshot Converse 8-1 overall and attempted a pair of corner kicks in the opening half. The Valkyries bend but don't break defense worked as they went into the halftime break tied 0-0.
In the second half the Francis Marion offense went on the offensive once again but the Valkyries back line and starting goalie
Allie Nepomuceno made a pair of big saves to keep the Patriots scoreless. Then in the 79
th minute of action, Galler connected with Gonzalez for the go-ahead goal for the Valkyries.
The Valkyries will stay at home this coming Tuesday as they face-off against Young Harris. The game is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start against the Mountain Lions.
