Men’s Soccer Forced to Settle for Draw with Francis Marion

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite outshooting the Francis Marion Patriots (5-1-3, 4-0-1 Conference Carolinas) 17-10, the Converse University men's soccer team (5-2-1, 3-1-1 Conference Carolinas) was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw after a scoreless second half.

The Valkyries held the Patriots to just four shots on goal, three of which sophomore goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde saved.

The Patriots and Valkyries each had limited scoring opportunities in the first half and the only team able to find the back of the net was Francis Marion in the 33rd minute.

Just under 10 minutes later, the Valkyries responded with the game-evening goal on a penalty kick from junior Gabriel Verona. Despite two shots in the final three minutes from Francis Marion, the Valkyries' defense held strong and the teams entered the break even at 1-1.

The Valkyries held a massive advantage in shots in the second half, 14-2. Four of the Valkyries shots were on goal while only one of the Patriots was. Baerwalde recorded a save on that one shot on goal. Despite the huge advantage in shots, the Valkyries were unable to score the decisive goal and were forced to settle for a draw with the east division leaders.

Converse is back on the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 3 as they host Young Harris for the second game of their three-game homestand. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
