Goals Galore as Converse Men’s Soccer Downs Belmont Abbey

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After losing a heartbreaking Wednesday night matchup to Coker, the Converse University men's soccer team (3-2, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) defeated the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (2-3-1, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) 4-0. The Valkyries split the goals evenly between the first and second half.

The Valkyries started off the match with an early goal from junior forward Hayden Gensler in the 12th minute. He was assisted by sophomore forward Guilherme Fontes and Converse took a lead they would never relinquish.

Junior defender Gabriel Verona joined in on the fun in the 36th minute after converting a penalty kick.

Each team took four shots in the first half but only Converse was able to find the back of the net.

After almost 15 minutes had elapsed in the second half, junior midfielder Sinan Kilincarslan used a free kick to put the ball past the outstretched arm of the Crusaders' keeper to add yet another goal to the Valkyries' total.

Sophomore forward Kyle Lewis added the final goal on a penalty kick just 60 seconds later.

Converse outshot the Crusaders 5-1 in the second half as the team secured their first conference victory of the season.

The Valkyries return home on Wednesday, Sept. 20 as they host King University for Purple Reign Night. The match is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
