Men’s Soccer Reigns Over King With Three-Goal Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After a match that saw the visiting King Tornado (2-4, 0-2 Conference Carolinas) receive eight yellow cards, the Converse University men's soccer team (4-2, 2-1 Conference Carolinas) flurry of goals led the team to a 3-2 victory, the team's second consecutive victory of three or more goals.

Junior forward Johannes Haden kicked off the scoring in the 19th minute with a goal assisted by senior forward Joan Bauza Sureda.

Despite taking 12 shots in the first half, the Valkyries only managed to score once and took their one-goal lead into the break.

After a slower start in the second half, junior forward Jaxon Keene netted his first goal of the season in the 75th minute. Sophomore forward Guilherme Fontes recorded his second assist of the season as his shot immediately before Keene's bounced off the King keeper.

Five minutes later, junior defender Gabriel Verona scored following a penalty kick. Although the Tornado's keeper managed to save the penalty kick, the save deflected right back to Verona who easily tapped the ball in for the Valkyries third and final goal of the night.

Converse limited King to just four shots on the night. Only two of those shots were on goal and both were saved by sophomore keeper Tim Baerwalde.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 23 as they head to Tigerville to take on the North Greenville Crusaders. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
