Men’s Soccer Falls to Coker on Late Goal

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In their Wednesday-night matchup against national No. 16 Coker (2-0-3, 0-0-1 South Atlantic Conference), the Converse University men's soccer team (2-2, 0-1 Conference Carolinas) fell 1-0 to the Cobras after a late goal put Coker up with little time for the Valkyries to respond.

Both the Cobras and Valkyries entered the matchup after being ranked in Wednesday's southeast region poll by the United Soccer Coaches. Coker ranked second in the region and the Valkyries ranked sixth. The Cobras also found their way onto the national poll at No. 16.

The teams were even through the first 45 minutes of the contest. Both teams recorded two shots in the first half. The only one of those four shots that was on goal came from sophomore forward Guilherme Fontes.

Converse attempted just three shots in the second half. Coker attempted eight and had three on goal.

The game remained even until the 88th minute when, following a corner kick, Coker found the back of the net in a busy box stacked with Cobras and Valkyries.

The Valkyries made a final push with under two minutes to play, but were unable to equalize the game and fell 1-0 to the Cobras.
