SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse Valkyries swept the Chowan Hawks in a Conference Carolinas series at Tyger River Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
A lighting delay did not put a damper in the Valkyries plans as they recorded two home runs in the game one 9-8 win and racked up all six of their runs at the end of the 3
rd inning to defeat the Hawks 6-5 in game two. Converse moves to 12-18 overall and 3-3 in conference play while Chowan moves to 15-14 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
Game 1 Notes:
- Top 1 – Misenheimer started Chowan off with a home run and H. Reid scored the second run to give the Hawks the early 2-0 lead over the Valkyries.
- Top 3 – Chowan added to move runs to the board, advancing their lead to four runs overall.
- Bottom 4 – Serrrah Ballard started Converse off with a walk and Abby Bardonaro was put in to pinch run for her. Madeline Modica then homered, getting the Valkyries on the board with two runs. Makenna Hill was hit by a pitch and stole second and third before scoring as Ayellad Howard singled up the middle. Chesney Miles followed by singling to left field. She scored as Karleigh Crabill doubled down the left field line. Miles' run put the Valkyries in the lead 5-4.
- Top 6 – An error on the Valkyries' shortstop allowed the Hawks to score the tying run. They followed with two more runs to be up 7-5 on Converse.
- Bottom 6 – With two on base, Crabill homered to give the Valkyries the 8-7 lead. Rylee Summers singled to second base and scored Converse's ninth run as Grace McKinney singled up the middle.
- Top 7 – The Hawks put one final run up on the board before dropping game one 9-8 to Converse.
Crabill led the team overall with three at bats, one run, two hits and four RBIs. Modica followed with four at bats, one run, two hits and two RBIs. Ballard pitched 5.2 innings with three strikeouts and Summers pitched 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
Game 2 Notes:
- Bottom 1 – Miles started the inning for Converse by singling to shortstop and then stole second. She scored as Crabill bunted. Albano then bunted and moved Crabill to second base. Ballard singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw as Crabill scored and Albano advanced to third. Kayla Rocha then hit a sacrifice bunt which allowed Albano to put the Valkyries third run on the board.
- Bottom 3 – Crabill tripled to left center and scored as Albano doubled to left center. She stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Modica reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Bardonaro to score the Valkyries sixth and final run of the game.
- Top 4 – H. Reid got Chowan on the board as M. Leon doubled down the left field line.
- Top 6 – The Hawks put up three more runs to make it a 6-4 game, still in Converse's favor.
- Top 7 – Mishenheimer scored the fifth run for the Hawks who dropped game two 6-5 to Converse.
Crabill led the Valkyries in game two, too, with four at bats, two runs, two hits and one RBI. Four other Valkyries also had RBIs with two more having two hits and one having two runs. Ballard pitched 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and Summers pitched 1.1 innings.
Next Up:
Converse will be at home again on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. as they host Emmanuel.
