SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University softball team split with King University on Saturday afternoon, picking up their first conference win of the season 5-3 against the Tornado and dropping game two 16-4. The Valkyries move to 10-14 overall and 1-1 in Conference Carolinas action while King moves to 13-12 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Game 1 Notes:
- Top 1 – Campbell walked and then scored as an error was committed by the Converse second baseman to give King an early 1-0 lead.
- Bottom 1 – The Valkyries answered as Chesney Miles scored off of a Karleigh Crabill sacrifice fly.
- Top 3 – Lawson homered and Campbell scored the third run of the game to put King back in front.
- Bottom 5 – Ryan Finazzo singled up the middle and advanced to second before scoring as Kayla Rocha singled to right field. Serrah Ballard then scored as the Tornado shortstop had an error. Rocha then scored on a wild pitch to give the Valkyries the go-ahead run.
- Bottom 6 – Miles secured the win for Converse, scoring the 5th run as Faith Hauser grounded out.
Miles led the Valkyries with four at bats, two runs and two hits. Rocha recorded three at bats, one run, two hits and one RBI while Ballard had three at bats, one run and two hits while pitching all seven innings with two strikeouts.
Game 2 Notes:
- Top 2 – King got three runs on the board to start the second game.
- Bottom 2 – Rocha scored a run for Converse as Makenna Hill singled.
- Top 4 – Campbell and Thompson both homered to give the Tornado a 5-1 lead.
- Top 5 – Helms then homered followed by two more Kings runs as they went up 8-1 on Converse.
- Bottom 5 – Hill walked and scored as Crabill singled to the right side. Hauser then singled and Emily Ingle pinch ran for her. Both Crabill and Ingle scored as Finazzo singled through the left side to make it 8-4.
- Top 6 – Eight more Tornado runs were scored to close out the game.
Crabill led Converse with three at bats, one run, two hits and one RBI. Finazzo followed with three at bats, one hit and one RBI.
Rylee Summers pitched 3.1 innings with one strikeout, Ballard pitched 2.1 innings and Ingle threw for 0.1 innings.

The Valkyries will travel to Lees-McRae on Tuesday afternoon for a pair of games at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
