Haden’s Goal Leads Men’s Soccer Past Bobcats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With a brilliant feed from junior defender, Max Seiwald, junior forward Johannes Haden's 75th minute goal secured a Saturday-night divisional victory for the Converse University men's soccer team (6-3-1, 4-2-1 Conference Carolinas) over the Lees-McRae Bobcats (3-4-3, 3-2-1 Conference Carolinas).

Junior forward Hayden Gensler led the team in shots with five, all five of which were on-target. The Valkyries controlled possession the entire night, taking 16 shots compared to the six attempted by the Bobcats. With the onslaught of Valkyrie defenders, Lees-McRae only managed one shot on goal, limiting sophomore goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde's action.

The Valkyries held a slight advantage during the first half. They only took two more shots than the Bobcats during the first 45 minutes of the match. Despite that advantage, the team headed into the break even 0-0.

With a fire only head coach Rob Miller can ignite in his team, the Valkyries came out in the second half looking to remind everyone they are the defending conference champions. The team took nine shots in the half while only allowing the Bobcats the opportunity to take one shot. Dominating possession battle, it was only a matter of time before the Valkyries found the back of the net.

That time finally came in the 75th minute when Seiwald fed the ball to Haden who put it right past the Bobcat's keeper.

The Bobcats tried in vain to get the ball back and even the score, but they were unable to do so and Converse secured their third division victory 1-0. With Saturday night's division win, the Valkyries swept the division on their first time through.

The Valkyries are back on the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 10 as they travel to Bob Jones University for a 7-p.m. matchup.
