GREENVILLE, S.C. – With a commanding defensive present and an offense that once again controlled the pace of play, the Converse University men's soccer team (6-4-1, 4-2-1 Conference Carolinas) unfortunately were unable to find the back of the net and fell to the Bob Jones Bruins (8-3-1, 1-0 NCCAA) 1-0 despite holding the Bruins to just four shots.
Junior forward Nicholas Gartung led the Valkyries in shots with three, all three of which were on goal. Fellow junior forward Joel Houston was second on the team with two shots, also both on goal.
In the first half, the Valkyries attempted shots on goals in the 25th and 42nd minutes, both of which were saved by the Bruins' keeper and forced the teams into the break with an even 0-0 draw.
Converse came out of the gates swinging in the second half, passing their shots on goal total from the first half within 15 minutes. But still the Valkyries were unable to seal the deal and came up empty-handed.
Finally, in the 83rd minute, the Bruins attempted their first shot on goal of the match. Unfortunately for Converse, that shot found the back of the net and gave the home team the lead with under seven minutes to play.
The Valkyries attempted one more shot on goal with three minutes to play, but they were unsuccessful in securing the tying goal and fell 1-0 to the Bruins.
Converse is back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 14 as they head to Bristol, Tennessee to take on the King Tornado for the second time this season. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
