No. 10 Converse Silences Saints Offense for Fifth Straight Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team won their fifth consecutive match to open up the 2022 season and their seventh straight dating back to last season with a 4-0 win over the Maryville Saints on Sunday morning at Weisiger Stadium.

"I'm really proud of the total team effort we put forth today," Converse University head coach Valerie Clarke said. "Maryville battled hard and is a great first year program and never gave up. We were able to get the win today through having each player contribute in their role and we committed to playing our game today. We've defended our turf and are making history with a 5-0 start to the season!"

No. 10 Converse (5-0, 2-0 SAC) put on yet another defensive clinic with their second clean sheet of the week. The Valkyries defense remained stingy as they allowed just one shot in the match late in the fourth quarter. This past week the Valkyries outshot their opponents 48-1 and outscored their opponents by a combined score of 9-0.

On Sunday morning the Valkyries got back to work with 10 shots in the opening frame against a Maryville (2-3) team that was playing their third game in four days. Sophomore forward Lotte Kanters struck first with her ninth goal of the season off an assist by Larissa Stanjeck.

In the second quarter of action freshman Kilee Bradeen scored both goals for the Valkyries as Kanters assisted on the first of the period. At the halftime break the Valkyries held a 3-0 lead over the Saints.

The second half was tightly contested between the two squads as both teams only managed one shot in either the third or fourth periods. However, the Valkyries lone shot gave Kanters her second goal of the afternoon and Converse a 4-0 lead with just four minutes to play in the game. Madison Shorey earned her second victory of the season after playing three shutout quarters in the cage.

Game Leaders:
