SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Converse University field hockey attempted a four-quarter comeback on Monday morning but time ran out before the Valkyries could complete the comeback, as they fell 3-2 to No. 2 Shippensburg at the Robb Sports Complex.
"We left it all out on the field today," Converse University head field hockey coach
Valerie Clarke said. "We came to the defending national champions, on their field, and we pushed them to the brink. I am so proud that we didn't give up after going down two goals, we refused to accept that and roared back in the second half, actually outshooting them in the game. We proved that we belong with the best in the country. I am so proud."
In a battle between two of the top teams in the country, Converse (14-2) did not stand down as they outshot and controlled the game in the opening period of action. The Valkyries attempted more shots (4) and more corners (3) against Shippensburg (14-2), while the Raiders goalie kept them in the game with a pair of saves.
In the second period of action the Raiders took control of the game as they scored a pair of goals against the Valkyries defense. Shippensburg also outshot the Valkyries 5-0 and attempted a pair of corners in the contest.
Coming out of the halftime break the Raiders remained in control of the contest and outshot the Valkyries 11-2 and attempted 8 penalty corners in the period. Converse awoke in the final period of action and made a valiant comeback attempt.
Josephine Jense scored her first career goal to get the Valkyries on the board but moments later the Raiders scored to once again make it a two-goal deficit.
Lotte Kanters scored on a penalty stroke with four minutes to go in the period to pull the Valkyries back within one once again. Unfortunately, time ran out on the Valkyries but they outshot the Raiders 12-2 in the final period and forced the Shippensburg goalkeeper to make eight saves in the period.
