GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team defeated Mount Olive 1-0 on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Limestone University.
"I am so proud of this team and the way that they have been able to come together as a family so early on in the season," Converse University head field hockey coach Valerie Clark said. "This was an historic win for us today and I'm excited building this success throughout this season."
Sophomore
Eryn Follett (Lakeside, Calif.) scored the first goal of her career with 8:30 to play in the opening quarter of action. Freshman
Layla Frost (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) assisted on the play and the Valkyries never looked back as they cruised to their first win of the season. Today's win marks the first time in program history the Valkyries have won a season opening game.
First Quarter Notes:
- At the 8:30 mark of the opening quarter, Eryn Follett scored her first career goal off a pass from Layla Frost.
- Converse outshot Mount Olive 4-1 in the opening frame.
- The Valkyries recorded a save in the first quarter and took a pair of penalty corners.
- Converse appeared to be the more aggressive team picking up eight fouls in first quarter.
Second Quarter Notes:
- Converse outshot Mount Olive 3-1 in the second quarter.
- Both schools recorded a corner in the second frame of action.
- Fouls were deadlocked at three in the second stanza of action.
Third Quarter Notes:
- Converse outshot Mount Olive 4-1 in the quarter.
- Mount Olive recorded two saves in the period to keep the game within a single goal.
- Converse took the only corner in the third period.
- Both Schools ended with five fouls each in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter Notes:
- Converse outshot Mount Olive 3-0 in the final quarter of action
- The Valkyries attempted an additional two corners in the fourth quarter.
- Both School ended with five fouls each in the fourth quarter.

Converse will have a few days to get ready for a road trip to the Tar Heel State. The Valkyries will battle Belmont Abbey on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
