Converse Men’s Soccer Dominates in Programs First Game

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's soccer team recorded a 5-0 drubbing of Columbia College on Friday evening at McCracken Field in front of a sold out crowd for the programs first ever win.
 
Tonight, was a historic occasion for both schools as it marked the start of male athletics at both institutions. For Converse (1-0-0) it was a strong showing from start to finish as they out shot Columbia College (0-1-0) 33-3.
 
Tim Boeckstaens (Belgium) scored the first goal in program history in the 24th minute of action. Boeckstaens was assisted on the play by Gero Wolters (Niederkruchten, Germany). Six minutes later, Boeckstaens became the first player to score multiple goals in a match when he found the back of the net off a pass by Ryan De Leon (Frisco, Texas).
 
In the second half of action Hayden Gensler (Cleveland, Ga.), Jaxon Keene (Lexington, S.C.) and Walters all notched goals in the 5-0 win over Columbia College. David Windmiller (Sautee, Ga.) recorded two saves on his way to his first clean sheet in a Converse uniform.  
 
First Half Notes:
  • Converse outshot Columbia College 20-1 in the opening half of play.
  • In the 24th minute of action Boeckstaens scored the first goal in program history and Wolters assisted on the play.
  • In the 30th minute of action Boeckstaens once again found the back of the net and was assisted by De Leon.
  • Converse recorded a trio of Corners in the first half and fouls were tied at seven each.
Second Half Notes:
  • In the 50th minute Ryan Zupa assisted on a Hayden Gensler goal.
  • In the 68th minute Jaxon Keene scored on a Sinan Kilincarslan assist.
  • In the 84th minute Gero Wolters scored on a penalty kick.
  • Converse out shot Columbia College 13-2 in the second half.
  • Converse attempted 4 corner kicks in the second half and committed six fouls.
  • Columbia College ended the game with four yellow cards.
Game Leaders:
  • Boeckstaens ended the game with a team best two goals in the contest.
  • Boeckstaens, Sergi Quixal, Wolters, Keene and Nicholas Gartung each took four total shots.
  • Quixal and Wolters led the team with three shots on goal each.
  • Windmiller played all 90 minutes in goal and collected two saves on the way to the first shutout in program history.
Next Up:
This coming Sunday, Converse will travel across the border into North Carolina to battle Mars Hill. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
