Valkyries Fall to Mars Hill in First Ever Road Match

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Converse University men's soccer team fell 3-0 at Mars Hill on Sunday night in their first official road game of the 2021 season. 
 
Mars Hill (1-1-0) came out aggressive in the opening half of play and maintained possession for the majority of the period. Converse (1-1-0) held off the Lions early but gave up a pair of scores in the 9th and 11th minute. The teams traded possessions the remainder of the half with the Valkyries getting a few good looks here and there.
 
Coming out of the halftime break, Converse had a pair of opportunities to get on the scoreboard but were denied by the Lions. David Windmiller made a pair of great saves to keep the match at a 2-0 deficit. In the 58th minute Sebastian Bertilsson scored the third goal of the night for Mars Hill, for Bertilsson it was his second goal of the night.
 
First Half Notes:
  • 9th minute, Jake White scores the first goal of the game for Mars Hill with an assist by Jeppe Christensen.
  • 11th minute, Sebastian Bertilsson scored the second goal of the period and was assisted by Braxton Robinson.
  • Mars Hill outshot Converse 10-2 and 4-1 in shots on goal.
  • Both teams had a pair of corners in the first half.
  • Mars Hill committed six fouls in the opening half, while Converse committed three. However, out of those three fouls the Valkyries recorded a pair of yellow cards.
Second Half Notes:
  • In the 58th minute of action Bertilsson scored his second goal of the game and was assisted by Kevonte Willoughby-Williams.
  • Mars Hill outshot Converse 12-5 in the second half and 22-7 overall in the game.
  • Converse took one corner in the second half to finish with a trio of corners for the game.
  • Windmiller finished with a pair of saves in the second half and Brennan Whalen of Mars Hill finished with a pair of saves as well in the second stanza of action.
  • Converse was more aggressive with seven fouls in the second half of action. 
Next Up:
Converse will scrimmage USC Union at home this coming Wednesday evening. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first kick.
