Valkyries Dominate Queens to End Losing Streak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Converse University field hockey team entered the day on a three-game losing streak and had never won at Queens University (N.C.), two hours later the Valkyries walked off Bessant Field with a 3-1 win over the Royals.

With the win on Sunday, Converse (2-3, 2-1 SAC/CC) picked up their first road win since an October 29, 2017 match against Molloy resulted in a 3-2 win for the Valkyries. Converse now moves into the top-three in the South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas standings, while Queens drops down to sixth in the conference standings.

Following a scoreless first quarter of action, the Valkyries came out focused and aggressive on the offensive side of the pitch. Just three minutes into the second quarter Bo Linders found Samantha White for the first goal of the game. Converse finished the second period with six corner attempts and nine shot attempts.

Throughout the third quarter the Valkyries held off multiple offensive attacks by the Royals. Then with just two-minutes remaining Gabe Lechner found Irene Zvorsky for the equalizer. Following the quarter break the Valkyries once again took charge on the offensive end.

Mira Polzer passed the ball upfield on a perfectly timed through pass to Lotte Kanters. Kanters then streaked past a pair of Royal defenders to score the go-ahead goal for the Valkyries. Less than a minute later, Layla Frost found the back of the net and the Converse bench exploded with passion. The Valkyries were able to run out the remaining six-minutes of game time to take home the win.

Polzer led the Valkyries offense with five total shots and a pair of shots on goal, Luisa Fasold, Kanters, White and Frost all finished second on the team with two total shots in the game. Ciriaca Petitto played all 60-minutes in goal for the Valkyries and made four saves in the contest.
