SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a hot and muggy South Carolina day, the Converse women's soccer team defeated Chowan University 2-1 in their Conference Carolinas opener on Saturday afternoon at McCracken Field.
With the win, Converse (1-3-2, 1-0-0 CC) ended a four-game losing streak to Chowan (0-5-0, 0-2-0 CC) dating back to the 2016 season. The Valkyries are now unbeaten in their last three matches dating back Labor Day.
Converse got off to a hot start in the opening half of play,
Ellie Gore lined up for a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and connected with fellow freshman
Sophie Wang for the first goal of the game. The Valkyries have now scored in the opening 10-minutes of a game on three different occasions this season. The goal was also the first career goal for Wang.
The two teams jockeyed for position throughout the remainder of the half until the 29
th minute of the contest. Sabrina Henderson scored on a through pass by Brielle Dumont. For Henderson it was her second goal of the season for the Hawks.
In the second half the two teams remainder fairly even throughout the contest. Then in the 65
th minute
Olivia Brooks found
Rowan Deubel for the game-winning goal. Both Wang and Deubel led the team in total shots (1) and shots on goal (1).
Daelynn Perry picked up the win in goal for the Valkyries, playing all 90 minutes and recording a pair of saves in the match.
First Half Notes:
- 6th minute, Ellie Gore hits Sophie Wang on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box to open up the scoring.
- 29th minute, Sabrina Henderson scores on a through pass from Brielle Dumont.
- Chowan outshot Converse 6-3 in the opening frame and attempted a trio of corner kicks, while converse attempted just one corner kick in the opening stanza.
- Cowan was also the more physical team as they committed five fouls in the opening period of action.
Second Half Notes:
- 65th minute, Olivia Brooks finds Rowan Deubel for the game winning goal.
- Chowan outshoots Converse in the second half 8-3 and attempts a trio of corner kicks.
- Converse appeared to be the more aggressive team in the second half with six fouls committed.
Next Up:
Converse will stay at home this week and will host Lees-McRae College on Tuesday night at McCracken Field. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
