SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With just five minutes remaining in the first overtime period, the Chowan Hawks ripped the hearts out of Converse fans with a goal in the 95
th minute to give the Hawks a 2-1 win at McCracken Field on Saturday afternoon.
Converse (2-2-1, 0-1-0 CC) and Chowan (3-2-0, 2-1-0) came into the match as the No. 4 and No.5 schools in the Conference Carolinas standings. The two programs did not disappoint as they battled for a full 90 minutes and then some before the Hawks snuck a goal in the closing minutes of the first overtime period.
Chowan started the scoring early with a goal in the 15
th minute of action. Harri Lovett found Erik Ruiz for his first goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 until the 82
nd minute of the game,
Tim Boeckstaens came open on a free kick from
Sinan Kilincarslan and the Valkyries had tied up the game. Boeckstaens is now second on the team in goals scored this season with three, all three goals have occurred during a home game.
Gero Wolters and
Hayden Gensler led the offensive attack for the Valkyries with a pair of shots each in the game. Wolters led the team with a pair of shots on goal, while
David Windmiller recorded four saves in the loss.
Erik Ruiz led Chowan with four total shots and a pair of shots on goal. Harri Lovett recorded a pair of assists in the win for the Hawks. Toby Sims, Dennis Bates, Tren Drexhage and Thomas Shin all recorded a pair of shots in the game. Charlie Farrar led the team with a trio of saves in 95 minutes of action.
First Half Notes:
- 15th minute, Harri Lovett finds Erik Ruiz for the first goal of the game.
- 31st minute, Tim Boeckstaens is given a yellow card.
- Chowan outshot Converse 9-5 in the opening half of play.
- Both sides were even with saves 3-3, corner kicks 3-3 and fouls 7-7.
Second Half/Overtime Notes:
- 53rd minute, David Fallerios is given a yellow card.
- 82nd minute, Time Boeckstaens scores off a pass by Sinan Kilincarslan.
- 95th minute, Owen Collins is given a yellow card.
- 95th minute, Harri Lovett hits London Williams on a corner kick to win the game for Chowan.
- Chowan outshoots Converse 8-3 in the second half/overtime period.
- Both teams ended with a trio of fouls in the second half, but Chowan recorded four corner kicks in the second half.

Converse will look to regroup this Tuesday night with a match against Lees-McRae College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at McCracken Field.
