MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Converse University field hockey team dropped a tough, hard, fought 3-1 battle to No. 6 Millers on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm so proud of how this team has battled to start the season," Converse University head field hockey coach
Valerie Clarke said. "We came up and played some of the best teams in Division II and we proved that we can play at their level. This was a great early season test and I can't wait to use what we learned in our conference games."
Millersville struck first in the 25
th minute of the game with a goal by Morgan Saunders. Bri Harsh assisted on the play. The Converse defense stood strong in the opening half of play as they made six saves to make keep it within a single score.
Just seconds into the second half Kristin Strijdom scored off an assist from Hannah Brown to give Millersville a 2-0 advantage. Moments later Keaghan Keracher scored the third goal of the day for Millersville.
In the 47
th minute of the game
Teana Maloney scored her first career goal to help the Valkyries avoid the shutout.
Mira Polzer picked up the assist on the goal. Converse played all 25 players on Sunday afternoon and showed how versatile this team can be with their fourth different goal scorer of the season.
First Half Stats:
- 3rd minute, Julia Matthijssen received a green card.
- 23rd minute, Bernardita Calliera received a yellow card.
- 24th minute, Morgan Saunders opens the game with a goal and was assisted by Bri Harsh.
- The Valkyries were outshot 12-1 in the opening half but made six saves to keep it a one score contest going into the halftime break.
Second Half Stats:
- 30th minute, Kristin Strijdom scored the second goal of the afternoon and was assisted by Hannah Brown.
- 34th minute, Keaghan Keracher scored and unassisted goal to give Millersville a 3-0 lead.
- 47th minute, Teana Maloney scores her first career goal to put the Valkyries on the board. Mira Polzer picked up the assist.
Next Up:
The Valkyries will have a week off to prepare for their matchup against Queens University (N.C.). The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time next Sunday afternoon.
