Spartanburg, SC- King University visited Tyger River Park for a weekday conference matinee and swept the Valkyries. The Tornado used a combination of good pitching and timely hitting to win both games this afternoon.
Game 1 Recap: King used a 5 run fifth inning to blow open a 1-0 game. King batted around in the inning and used a couple Converse throwing erros to add to their lead. Meagan Puckett drove in a run and scored in the inning while also driving in two other runs as she led the Tornado to a 9-0 win in five innings. King also got a gem on the mound from starting pitcher Nikole Counts who went 4 strong innings allowing only 2 hits and striking out 3.
Moriah Gomez and
Maria Luce were the only Valkyrie batters to record hits in the game.
Game 2 Recap: A pitchers duel ensued in game 2 as
Reagan Owens and Carly Turner provided exemplary performances for their teams. Turner would strike out 12 across 6.2 innings while only giving up 2 runs. Owens was equally as impressive only allowing 3 runs across 7 full innings and striking out 5. King would capitalize on seemingly the only Owens error with a 2-run homerun from Chelsea Sams that put the Tornado ahead 3-2 in the top of the 6th inning. That lead would go on to be enough as Turner would shut down the Valkyrie bats and Marleigh Duncan would come in to get the final out to secure the win for King.
Moriah Gomez would provide the offense for Converse in game 2 as she recorded 3 hits, one of them a double, and drove in a run as well.
On Deck: Converse will continue their quick stretch of games a they travel to Central, SC to battle Southern Wesleyan on Friday. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
