Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer battles Shaw to 0-0 tie in Double Overtime

Spartanburg, SC – The Converse Women's Soccer team returned to action Wednesday night, for a non-conference match-up against CIAA member Shaw University.  The Valkyries were coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Erskine and were looking to bounce back and get in the win column.  The Bears were also searching for its first win of the season and both teams knew coming in, that it would be a defensive game.

The first half saw both teams trying to establish control and searching for offensive runs.  Even though the Valkyries and Shaw both had opportunities, they were unable to get anything past the keepers.  The Bears finished with 5 shots to Converse's 4.  The first half ended the way it started with a score of 0-0.  The second half would go the same way as the first, with the defenses, once again playing strong.  The Valkyries shut down any scoring opportunities Shaw would generate and their effort forced the game into overtime.

The first overtime was a mirror of regulation.  Even though Converse was able to create some scoring chances, the Bears would not allow anything past their keeper.  Darian Bankston received the same help from the Valkyries' defense, which would force the game into a 2nd overtime.  Neither team was able to score in the 2nd extra ten minutes, and the game would ultimately end in a tie, 0-0.

Converse was led offensively by Isabel Fangman, who finished the game with 3 shots, 2 of which were on goal.  Goalkeeper, Darian Bankston had 4 saves on the night and recorded her first shutout of the season.  The Valkyries will be back in action this Sunday as the travel to Murfreesboro, NC to face Chowan University, in their first road game of the season.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30PM.
