WILSON, N.C. – In the closing moments of Saturday afternoon's matchup between Barton and Converse University, Valkyries freshman
Jaxon Keene scored the game-winning goal in the 87
th minute to give Converse a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.
Converse (8-8-2, 4-6-1 CC) and Barton (8-6-0, 7-4-0 CC) were evenly matched and went toe-to-toe in almost every major statistical category on Saturday afternoon. The two squads went scoreless in the opening half with Barton holding an edge with eight shots. Both teams recorded a pair of saves in the opening period, while Converse held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks against the Bulldogs. Both teams also picked up a yellow card in the opening 45 minutes of action.
Throughout the second half the two teams appeared to be heading to overtime before the
Jaxon Keene goal in the 87
th minute. The Valkyries were outshot 3-4 in the second half and starting goalie
David Windmiller only had to make one save in the second period. Things got a little bit chippy between the two teams in the second half as five yellow cards were handed out between the two squads.
Keene led the Valkyries offense with a pair of shots on goal in the match.
Maximilian Seiwald added a pair of shots in the match, while
Tobias Bruecher,
Owen Collins and
Hayden Gensler each contributed shots. Windmiller made three saves in goal to preserve his fifth clean sheet of the season.
