Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mount Olive Ends Valkyries Unbeaten Streak

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon at newly renovated Hayden Abney Fulp Field.

The two squads fought to a stale mate in the opening half as both teams appeared to be evenly matched from the start. Mount Olive outshot the Valkyries 8-6 in the opening half, but Converse goalkeeper David Windmiller kept the Valkyries in the match with four first half saves. The Valkyries appeared to be the more aggressive of the two teams with seven fouls committed in the first period of action.

In the second period the Trojans continued to attack the Valkyries defense and finally found a weak point in the 55th minute of the contest. Kevin Avila found Alfie Pope for the go-ahead goal just 10-minutes into the second half. The Valkyries began to go on the offensive but were turned away time-and-time again by Mount Olive. Converse had a few close shots late in the game that flew just above the crossbar. In the 80th minute of the game Nicholas Gartung picked up a yellow card.

Jaxon Keene and Sinan Kilincarslan led the team with a pair of shots in the game, while Windmiller led the team with seven saves on the day.
