Valkyries Downed By League Leading Emmanuel

Box Score

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.  Freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Yohe compiled a team high eight kills and 11 digs, but it was not enough as the Converse (6-23, 1-10 CC) volleyball team was swept by Emmanuel (17-8, 11-1 CC) on Friday evening. The Golden Lions were able to pick up the conference win with set scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-18.

Morgan Pearson added five kills, while Kiara Cannon turned in four of her own. Lauren Tharrington paced the Valkyries with 21 assists and Sydney Allen contributed nine digs. Emmanuel's Jessica Gray led all players with 14 kills.

Emmanuel started the first set collecting six of eight to jump out to a quick 6-2 advantage. However, the Valkyries battled back and narrowed the deficit to 10-8 following a Yohe kill. After the two teams traded the next six points, EC ran off a crucial 6-0 run to race ahead 19-11 late. From that point the Purple and Gold played catch-up, but eventually dropped the set 25-18.

Set two was evenly contested in the beginning as Emmanuel held on to a one-point lead (8-7). However, another big run, this time 16-9, put the Golden Lions ahead 24-16. Cannon staved off one set point with a kill, but an error from the service line gave Emmanuel a commanding 2-0 match lead.

Just as the first two sets started, the third frame was the same as both squads battled to gain an advantage. EC pushed ahead 9-5, but four straight from Converse knotted the game at 9-all. Unfortunately, Emmanuel once again seized control with a scoring run (12-2), gaining a double-digit lead (21-11). Converse did not back down, running off seven of 10 to close the gap to 24-18, but a Gray killed ended the threat and the match.

The Valkyries will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Due West, S.C. to take on the Flying Fleet of Erskine College. First serve for that contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
