Converse Volleyball Weekend Recap: Barry University Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team will look to bounce back after going 0-4 this past weekend and facing three nationally ranked opponents.
 
Senior setter Alysha Arroyo was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts this past weekend. Converse is now 1-6 overall on the season.
 
Match One: #13 Barry 3, Converse 0
  • Barry jumped out to an early lead against the Valkyries and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-11 first set victory.
  • In the second set the Valkyries put up a stronger fight but ran out of time as Barry won the second set 25-17.
  • In the third set the Valkyries had their best hitting performance of the match with 12 kills and .118 hitting percentage. However, Barry still took the final set 25-18 to complete the sweep.
  • Ella Ruckman led the team with seven kills, Bree Lyons finished second on the team with six kills and Alayah Robertson finished third on the team with five kills.
  • Alysha Arroyo finished with her fourth double-double of the season and led the team with 13 assists, 10 digs and 2 aces. Emma Blackstar was second on the team with eight assists, while Scarlett Xiong was second on the team with seven digs.
 
Match Two: #1 St. Cloud State 3, Converse 0
  • Converse won the first two points of the match on a kill by Ariel Bryant and a service ace from Bryant as well. The Valkyries even stayed within striking distance through the first 12 points of the period.
  • Then St. Cloud State went on a run and took an 18-8 advantage late in the first set. Converse attempted to rally late but St. Cloud State held on for a 25-12 opening set win.
  • In the second set the two teams were tied through the first 14 points of the period. St. Cloud State made the first move and built an 18-10 lead over the Valkyries.
  • Converse rallied back with a 9-4 run and closed the gap to 21-19 in the second set. Converse ran out of time before St. Cloud State won the second set 25-22.
  • In the third set, the two teams were tied through the first 28 points of the period. St. Cloud State once again made the first move and built a 21-17 advantage over the Valkyries.
  • Converse rallied once again and closed the gap to 23-22 before St. Cloud State won the final two points of the match.
  • Alayah Robertson led the team with 7 kills, Bree Lyons finished second on the team with 6 kills and Ella Ruckman finished third on the team with 5 kills.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 14 assists, Scarlett Xiong led the way with 14 assists and Robertson also led the team with 4 total blocks on the night.
 
Match Three: Lubbock Christian 3, Converse 1
  • Converse opened the match on a 6-2 run and then let Lubbock Christian tie the match as six all.
  • The two squads went toe-to-toe with one another through the remainder of the set. Each team traded blows while the other countered with a run of their own. Tied at 25 a pair of self-inflicted errors by the Valkyries gave Lubbock Christian the opening set at 27-25.
  •  In the second set, Lubbock Christian made the first move by jumping out to an 11-6 lead over the Valkyries.
  • Converse countered and nearly tied the match at 14-13. The two teams then stayed close the rest of the period with Lubbock Christian pulling out a 25-23 second set win.
  • In the third set the Valkyries jumped out to an 11-8 lead over Lubbock Christian. A few moments later Lubbock Christian had fought back and taken a 15-13 advantage over the Valkyries.
  • Converse stayed strong and ended the third set on a 12-3 run. This offensive outburst allowed the Valkyries to win their first set of the weekend.
  • In the fourth set Lubbock Christian jumped out to leads of 14-7 and 16-8 against Converse. The Valkyries were unable to make a late push as Lubbock Christian won the final set 25-14.
  • Bree Lyons led the team with 11 kills, while Ariel Bryant and Alysha Arroyo each had 8 kills in the loss.
  • Alysha Arroyo picked up her second double-double of the season with 21 assists and 13 digs. Emma Blackstar finished second on the team with 16 assists and Scarlett Xiong led the team with 23 digs.  
 
Match Four: #21 Lynn 3, Converse 2
  • In the opening set the Valkyries jumped out to a 6-3 advantage before Lynn tied the set at seven all.
  • Converse took a small lead a few moments later and was able to withstand numerous attacks by Lynn. A service error by the Knights allowed Converse to take the opening set 25-23.
  • In the second set it was Lynn who jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage over Converse. Lynn eventually built a 17-7 lead over the Valkyries, a pair of late offensive pushes by the Valkyries fell short as they fell 25-15.
  • Lynn once again held the early advantage in the third set over Converse. A 5-1 Valkyries run eventually gave Converse a 15-12 lead midway through the set.
  • Converse used a few more offensive outburst in the set and stole the third period by a final score of 25-22.
  • In the fourth set the Valkyries once again fell behind 16-6 to Lynn. A few offensive runs happened late in the period, but it was not enough as Lynn forced a fifth set tiebreaker.
  • Convers fell behind 6-3 in the fifth set before rallying to pull within a pair of points at 12-10. Lynn won the final three points of the set to steal the match away from the Valkyries.
  • Ella Ruckman led the team with 10 kills on the afternoon, Ariel Bryant finished with nine kills and Alayah Robertson added eight kills in the loss.
  • Alysha Arroyo led the team with 23 assists and Emma Blackstar finished 10 assists. Scarlett Xion led the team with 17 digs and Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 13 digs.
 
Next Up:
Converse will host Lees-McRae on Wednesday evening for their home opener.
