Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Second half scoring lifts the Valkyries soccer team past the visiting Francis Marion Patriots, 5-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
Converse (2-2-1) started off hot in the contest as Nicole Doolittle found the back of the net just 2:28 into the match. Doolittle's pressure as the ball was played back allowed the junior to deflect the keeper's attempted clear and was able to find the back of the net for an easy 1-0 lead.
The Valkyries headed into the break with the 1-0 lead despite outshooting Francis Marion (0-5) 10-5.
Coming out of the break the offense clicked for the Valkyries as they posted four goals in the final 45 minutes of action. Hallie Lycans posted her second goal of the season from the middle of the box as Cassidy Marshall laid the pass back to Lycans finding the far post in the 53rd minute.
Less than five minutes later Anna Meister sent a deflected ball to her left finding Melissa Carlyle for her first collegiate goal for the 3-0 lead.
The offense did not stop their as Johanna Gelz found the back of the net in the 66' from range and putting it on the top shelf as Mariah Elliott assisted on the goal.
In the 75' Julia Babic lined up the free kick and found Elliott inside the box for the goal.
Converse's netminder Josee Waitrovich had a quiet night tallying four saves as the Patriots recorded 11 shots on the evening with four on frame. Waitrovich moves into a tie for first with 10 career wins. It is her fifth shutout of her career and first this season.
The Valkyries step back into Conference Carolinas play on September 17 as they take on King (Tenn.) in league play. Kick-off is slated for 3pm.
