Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- After trailing 2-0 to the visiting Barton Bulldogs in the Conference Carolinas opener on Saturday afternoon, the Valkyries soccer team was able to knot things at 2-all before eventually falling in overtime, 3-2.
Barton (1-3, 1-0) was able to get on the board midway through the first half scoring off the corner kick in the 23' for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs would tack on another goal coming out of the halftime break in the 47' on a breakaway goal.
Converse (1-2-1, 0-1) was able to get the wheels turning in the 56' when the Valkyries took advantage of a free kick on the left side of the box. Cassidy Marshall swung the kick in front of the cage and found the head of Nicole Doolittle. Doolittle flicked the pass over to Aidyn Cantor for the goal. It was Cantor's first collegiate goal.
With time winding down at the end of regulation, Emily Barry sent a perfectly placed through ball past the defensive back line to a waiting Sara Dorsett for the equalizer in the 85th minute.
Barton jumped on the attack in the overtime period taking three shots. Converse's keeper Josee Waitrovich was able to stop two of those shots allowing a rebound to find the back of the net for the game-winner.
Waitrovich finished the contest with seven saves on the afternoon. The Valkyries outshot the Bulldogs 25-15 but Barton gained the advantage 12-11 with shots on target.
The Valkyries will return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 13 against non-conference opponent Francis Marion. Kick-off is slated for 7pm.
