Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Converse struck early and often in the final match of a three game homestand, as the Valkyries defeated Mars Hill 5-2 on Wednesday evening.
Five different players scored for the Valkyries, while three added an assist in the win.
Converse (1-2-0) struck right out of the gate just 72 seconds into the match. Darby Boyd (Nags Head, N.C.) found Mariah Elliott (Tolland, Conn.) across the top of the box. Elliott finished the dish into the near post for the early 1-0 lead.
Elliott's goal is the second fastest goal in program history and fourth of her career.
Ten minutes later, the Lions keeper attempted a clear from outside their own box. Alex Marquez (West Hill, Calif.) sprinted down and deflected the ball and walked it in for her first goal of the season.
In the 37 minute, Josie Davis (Palm Coast, Fla.) found Georgia Jones (Solihull, England) inside the box to put the Valkyries up 3-0 heading into the half.
Mars Hill (0-3-0) found the back of the net in the second half twice to cut into the Valkyrie lead 3-2 in the 68'.
Converse rebounded after the two early second half goals and struck gold twice within a 65 second span. Claudia Coffin (Springboro, Ohio) found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal off the assist by Marquez.
Natalie Johnson (Leicester, England) added to the scoring in the 79' sending a rocket from outside the box putting it into the top shelf.
Josee Waitrovich (Waupaca, Wisc.) grabbed the win in the cage recording six saves.
The Purple and Gold head up the road to Gaffney, S.C. to face Conference Carolinas rival Limestone in the conference opener on Saturday, September 12 under the lights. Kick-off is at 7:30pm.
