Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- On a muddy pitch, the Valkyries were able to find the Golden Goal in the 97' for the 3-2 overtime victory against Columbia on Tuesday evening. Converse improves to 5-4 on the season and hands Columbia their second loss on the season falling to 7-2.
Ella Ritchie (Derby, England) ripped a shot from outside the box and was initially saved by the Columbia keeper. Nicole Doolittle (Orlando, Fla.) found the ricochet and finished it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Converse and Columbia finished the first half in a scoreless draw. The Valkyries posted a school record 377:34 holding an opponent scoreless.
The streak would be snapped in the 70' when Columbia would find the back of the net off a through ball. The attempt went through the hands of Josee Waitrovich (Waupaca, Wisc.) and gave the Koalas the 1-0 advantage.
Converse found some traction in the 78' when Halley Wisner (Rising Sun, Md.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season placing the shot on the top shelf from outside the box.
The Valkyries continued the attack pushing for the lead late in the match. A foul outside the box by Columbia created an opportunity for Converse. Natalie Johnson (Leicester, England) gave the Valkyries a 2-1 advantage off a beautiful free kick to the far post.
Columbia would post the equalizer in the 88' sending the match into overtime at 2-all. Converse posted two shots in the first overtime period.
Converse outshot Columbia 14-13 and 11-7 on target. The Valkyries had seven corners on the night.
Josee Waitrovich picked up her fifth win of the season allowing two goals and picking up five saves.
Converse heads to Conference Carolinas preseason favorite Belmont Abbey on Saturday, October 3 for a league showdown. Kick-off is at 12pm.
