Converse Knocks Out King In Another Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score

BRISTOL, TENN.- The Valkyries and Tornado battled into extra time for the second time in less than a 48 hour span with Converse advancing to the Conference Carolinas Semifinals after defeating King 4-3 in a double overtime thriller on a rainy Monday afternoon.

Josie Davis (Palm Coast, Fla.) made an impact in the match scoring the equalizer and the game-winner.  Davis received a pass from Ella Ritchie (Derby, England) from the left side of the field.  Ritchie curled the ball towards the cage and connected with Davis for the header.  The Valkyries (12-6-1) stormed the field as Davis' header spun past the end-line for the 4-3 victory with 1:22 remaining in the second overtime period.

King (9-7-2) started out with the momentum posting two goals in the first 15 minutes of the match.  The Valkyries cut into the momentum with a goal of their own in the 27' when Natalie Johnson (Leicester, England) ripped a shot from outside the box that had a little Valkyrie English on it after bouncing off the King keeper and spun into the goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.  Halley Wisner (Rising Sun, Md.) played the ball off to Johnson for the assist.

Josie Davis gave the Valkyries the spark off the bench in the second half finding the back of the net for the first of her two goals in the match.  Davis slotted a ball into the near post after the Tornado clear failed and beat the keeper diving to her right to make it 2-2.

Ten minutes later Converse put a dangerous ball into the box off an Ella Ritchie corner kick.  Ritchie's ball found Claudia Coffin (Springboro, Ohio) inside the box but her shot was deflected.  Georgia Jones (Solihull, England) was there to clean up the mess to give the Valkyries the 3-2 lead in the 72'.

King would tie things up after a long ball from the keeper was flicked on past the Valkyries' back line and put into the right hand side of the goal to send things into overtime for the third straight match in the series.

Converse and King both had opportunities in the first overtime period but neither team could net the game-winner.

As time was winding down and the match looked to be going to a shootout to decide it, Ella Ritchie curled the ball into the box and found the head of Josie Davis waiting from about eight yards out for the goal.

Converse heads into the Conference Carolinas semifinals for the second straight season and awaits the winner of the Belmont Abbey/Barton match that was rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon.  Converse could face Belmont Abbey for the second straight season in the semifinals.
