Wild Finish As Valkyries Derail Lady Railsplitters

Box Score

HARROGATE, TENN.-  With two goals in the final two mintues of the match, Converse nets two goals to push ahead of Lincoln Memorial to steal the win from the hands of the Lady Railsplitters on the road Monday afternoon, 3-2.

With 1:30 remaining in the match, LMU (3-6-3) was called for a foul near midfield.  Emily Barry (Wheaton, Ill.) sent the ball into the box and found Darby Boyd (Nags Head, N.C.) on the right side of the box for the equalizer, 2-2, going far post late in regulation.  Barry was credited with the assist.

Boyd's goal gives her 19 in her career, two off of the career leader.  Boyd is now the all-time career points lead with 52 points.

As time ran down, overtime looked imminent, but the Valkyries had other ideas.  Converse (6-6) continued the pressure on the LMU defense.  Converse ripped a shot towards the cage but was heavily guarded by the defense.  A misplay inside the box sent the ball bouncing towards the net and rolled over the end line for the own goal.  The first win for the Valkyries in program history on an own goal.  The second own goal in favor of the Valkyries this season (last, Chowan).

Converse found the equalizer in the first half after LMU scored just a couple minutes prior.  Darby Boyd ripped a shot but was blocked by a LMU defender.  The ball fell at the foot of Claudia Coffin (Springboro, Ohio) who connected a pass to Nicole Doolittle (Orlando, Fla.) finding the back of the net chipping it over the keeper to even the score 1-1.  It was Doolittle's fourth goal of the season and Coffin's first assist of the season.

LMU midfielder Hedstrom put the Railsplitters up 2-1 in the second half after making a couple defenders miss and finding the back of the net just out of the reach underneath the crossbar in the middle of the cage.

Converse snaps a two match losing streak against LMU and first meeting between the two programs since 2000.

The Valkyries wrap up their four-match road swing as Converse takes on Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday in Central, S.C.  The match is scheduled for 8pm.
