Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- It took the Valkyries 16 years since the program was reinstated for the first ever Conference Carolinas Championship defeating North Greenville 3-0 on Friday afternoon. Picked 7th in the preseason polls, Converse accepted the challenge and were crowned Conference Carolinas Champs with a 14-2-1 overall record and 9-1-1 in conference. North Greenville's season ended with a loss dropping them to 2-13-1 and 2-8-1 in the conference.
Converse came into the match with hopes of a share of the title with the only team to defeat the Valkyries, Pfeiffer. Before the match, Pfeiffer lost to Belmont Abbey, 1-0, paving the way for the Valkyries to win the conference outright.
The Valkyries struck fast in the opening stanza of the match off the boot of Ella Ritchie (Wirksworth, England). The Crusaders were called for a penalty inside the box allowing Converse to convert on the penalty kick for the early 1-0 lead in the 8'. Converse has converted 5-6 PKs this season.
Converse would take the 1-0 lead into the half, but wouldn't stop there. Bethany Spivey (Greensboro, N.C.) would find the head of Mikhaila Lisicki (Gilbert, Ariz.) off the corner kick in the 51' to put the lead up to 2-0.
The Valkyrie attack continued to push forward midway through the second half. Ritchie would find the back of the net once again in the 57' ripping a shot off a Crusader and out of the reach of the keeper for the 3-0 lead.
Converse outshot North Greenville 20-10 with 15 shots on target. Savannah Humphries picked up the win in the net on an easy night seeing two shots towards the cage with one save and a defensive save.
Converse will host the #8 seed Mount Olive, Tuesday Nov. 4 at 6pm.
