Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Converse soccer sits atop the Conference Carolinas standings heading into the final match of the season. The Valkyries defeated Southern Wesleyan 2-0 on Tuesday evening improving to 13-2-1 on the season and 8-1-1 in league play. SWU fell to 2-12-0 on the season and 1-9 in conference play.
With time winding down in the first half, Mikhaila Lisicki (Gilbert, Ariz.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Lisicki received the pass from Ella Ritchie (Wirksworth, England) from the sideline and chipped it over the Warrior keeper far post in the 36'.
Converse went into the intermission up 1-0 after taking 10 shots (four on target). SWU took one shot in the first half and the only shot on target for the Warriors.
The second half was quiet for both teams with Converse dominating the point of attack. Alex Marquez (West Hill, Calif.) put the Valkyries on top for good in the 85' blazing bast defenders and finding the far lower portion of the net to beat the Warrior keeper for a 2-0 lead.
SWU's only shot of the second half came in the 88' but was wide. Converse took 11 shots in the final 45'.
The scoreboard didn't reflect the domination of attack for the Valkyries. Converse outshot the Warriors 21-2 with nine of those being on target. Converse generated nine corners, six in the first half alone. Valkyrie keeper Savannah Humphries (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up her fourth win in the net and second shutout.
The Valkyrie defensive unit posted its second straight shutout and seventh on the season.
Converse will wrap-up the regular season against North Greenville, Saturday Nov. 1 at 6pm. Converse will honor Sydnie Hickey before the match.
