Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Regionally ranked Converse nets two second half goals upend Belmont Abbey and keeps title hopes alive. Valkyries defeated Crusaders 2-0 on Breast Cancer Awareness night, Saturday evening.
Converse (12-2-1, 7-1-1 CC) cashed in on its counter attack in the 77'. Sydnie Hickey (Baltimore, Md.) cleared the ball out of the Valkyrie box up to midfield. Alex Marquez (West Hill, Calif.) received the clear, dribbled past a defender and ripped a shot passed the Belmont Abbey (8-6-2, 7-3 CC) keeper outside the 18 yard box to put the Valkyries up 1-0.
Converse's attack did not stop there. Ten minutes later, Georgia Jones (Solihull, England) rips a shot from the middle of the box after receiving a pass from Bethany Spivey (Greensboro, N.C.) and Ella Ritchie (Wirksworth, England). Jones scored her sixth goal of the season.
Both team's defensive units kept the attacks at bay sending the match into the second half scoreless.
Belmont Abbey outshot Converse 21-10. Savannah Humphries (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up the win in goal for the Valkyries keeping the ball out of the back of the net and racked up seven saves.
Converse continues its home stand to end the regular season, taking on Southern Wesleyan, Oct. 28 at 6pm.
